Reserve Your Place in Lighthouse Point History
OUR GOAL was to build a memorial to honor of all of the individuals who have served in our nation’s armed forces in times of war and peace, as well as our city’s first responders. We want to ensure that the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country and community will always be remembered in Lighthouse Point. Inspired by United States Marine Dale Sloan Wilkinson, the only Lighthouse Point resident ever to have been killed in combat, the memorial began as an Eagle Scout project for 15-year old Ryan Kolb from Troop 238 in Lighthouse Point. It grew into a joint effort between the City of Lighthouse Point, The Exchange Club of Pompano Beach, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, the Archdiocese of Miami, and Gallo Herbert Architects. Ryan’s original sketch was incorporated into the final construction design of the memorial.
LOCATED in the northwest corner of Frank McDonough Park, the memorial consists of a 30-foot, circular base with decorative inlaid concrete in the shape of a compass rose. At the center of the compass, a 30-foot flagpole with a yardarm
proudly displays three flags, for country, state and city. Around the base, seven curved stone benches face the center, each inlaid with a brass emblem from five branches of the military and the Lighthouse Point fire rescue and police departments.
MEMORIAL BRICKS will continue to be available for sale to honor members of the military, fire rescue and police departments within the center of the memorial, and bricks with personal dedications are available in the walkway that leads to the circle.
